Kat Manton-JonesKat Manton-Jones is a Signature member of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild (SAWG) and an active member of the Arizona Watercolor Association (AWA). Most of my life I played classical music. During an art class at Pima Community College, I realized I'm more of a visual artist than a musician. The violin was tucked away and I began painting. Watercolor classes and books began to define my understanding of myself as a visual artist. Some classes emphasized technique and others functioned like open studio time with a weekly critique. Within classes I was provided time, space, colleagues, feedback, and motivation to experiment and share. Eventually, I felt comfortable enough to begin showing my work. I paint as often as possible while working full time and attending graduate school and I regularly submit work to juried competitions through SAWG and AWA. The unpredictability of watercolor painting is like magic and keeps the work fresh for me. Burnt Sienna, Windsor Green, and Prussian Blue are my favorite colors. An amazing range of colors can be achieved when working with a limited palette and the harmony that results when all the colors are related. I also like to use unexpected colors to capture the feelings I have about my subject. Art is an extremely satisfying outlet for emotional and imaginative expression. It is a teaching, healing, and learning activity for the artist and viewer of art. My challenge is to create images that tell stories, cherish memories, and make the mystical visible. Celebrating creative experiences with others is a blessing. People share incredible and varied personal memories and feelings when viewing art. I am grateful for the magic, irony, humor, and beauty that the Master Creator has presented so that I may understand, learn, and share in this life. |
