The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies (WFWS) was formed in 1974 through the foresight and work of Dr. David Gale (1915-1980) of the New Mexico Watercolor Society. Today, WFWS includes over 4,000 artists in 10 regional watercolor societies and guilds from 8 states west of the Mississippi. The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies encourages and recognizes artistic excellence through competitions and increased visibility of watercolor as an artistic medium through annual exhibitions, hosted by one of the member societies. For this year's 33rd Annual exhibition, there were 883 works by 433 of the West's best water media artists submitted to be juried by Katherine Chang Liu, a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and internationally known artist. One hundred and one paintings were selected for display and on February 10, 2008, Ms. Liu chose 14 paintings to receive awards from $200-$1100. An Awards Ceremony was held for Western Federation Delegates and Alternates, Donors and the artists on February 22, 2008. The public opening was February 23, with a reception on February 29, 2008. |

Also while here, Ms Liu, who has been featured in twenty-one books and forty five articles, gave a slide-illustrated public lecture on "Contemporary Art" at the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center, 1288 W. River Road on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild was proud to collaborate with Tucson Chinese Cultural Center on this event, helping to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and attendees were treated to a fabulous Chinese Dragon dance prior to Ms. Liu's talk. |
